When life brings changes both large and small shifts, we tend to be more open to new experiences. Think about it, maybe you start dating someone new and they show you something you end up loving- whether it’s a sport, music, new food and restaurants, and even how your perspective is on you work/personal life. These are literally things that has shifted in my life in the past few months just by meeting new people and allowing them/ allowing myself to be introduced to new experienced with … this is the important part.. an open mind.

I took a test recently that oddly enough one of these new people in my life had me try and i do have to say that my openness to experiences is a 96 out of 100 so i’m slightly understanding if me being open to new things is more eager than other people, but i’d say this is a definite learned trait that i have to continually be aware of that sometimes.. i’m stubborn. i know for those who really know me, this is shocking.. me stubborn?

It’s incredibly vulnerable to try something new especially if said something is putting you in a position you could be terrible at it in front of someone you just met, and sometimes we’re just plain stubborn. For real, i used to be the worst at allowing people to show me new music as if i wouldn’t like it. i have no clue why, i just wasn’t open to learning it. But over the years, i have found each relationship and person i meet has something to offer, something i can gain experience knowledge from and something of value and hopefully in turn i have something to give back too. and as a highly passionate person, it’s usually pretty obvious what i’m excited about and what i LOVE. i’ll be the first to admit i still have this weird thing about music. in fact when someone shows me new music with excitement, i have to warn them i’ll want to listen to it alone and soak it in.. and a lot of times.. like lately.. i’ve been building a pretty sweet playlist thanks to being open. okay so that’s such a small way to show i’m open to new things. but it’s one i struggled with, but as soon as i opened that floodgate, i allowed myself to really be eye opened to the things these new people were so excited about that they chose to share it with me.

when’s the last time you tried something new though? i mean for real? i know during this time it might look different, but i know there are things to still try. over the last few months, i’ve tried new restaurants, rock climbing, pole fitness class, reaching out to people that make me nervous to be on my podcast because it still makes me nervous, reaching out for connecting with other businesses, and a few more that i always said i wanted to try but just didn’t make the time and honestly didn’t give myself permission to value it enough or maybe value new experiences whether it’s small or big. I’m not talking just business, but if you’re not doing something that scares you, i encourage you to start, you’ll see growth like never before. and who knows what using your courage muscle will gain- could be a new friendship, relationship, networking opportunities, or finding something you really love. the only way to gain courage is to be courageous so mine as well try.

I’d say one thing i encourage every single person to try is to move states at least once, and you can always move back. this is one that as a 22 year old at the time was terrified. i had lived in minnesota, and moved only an hour away for college. I thought my worldview was pretty wide and when i moved from Las Vegas Nevada, to new mexico, to virginia, to now Florida i’ll tell you i’ve learned SO much that you just can’t learn by sticking in your same surroundings. I did it for the first time alone when i moved to Florida, and at the time it seemed necessary so i didn’t realize how scary it looked from the outside. i was going to start my business over, i didnt’ have another job lined up, i didnt’ have a permanent place, just a few friends i crashed at until i got my home and i knew a couple people that lived not terribly far away, but enough where i didn’t see them. I lived basically out of my car from November to late January as i shifted from home to home to not completely overstay my welcome with people.

it was the first time however that hit the ground running with my business because I chose Panama City Beach and i knew i wanted to be here for the foreseeable future. I’d say i got lucky, but i always think harder you work the more luck you seem to get, and i got a photography job with a local magazine thanks to some networking and marketing i did and meeting the right people who passed my name along. This magazine introduced me to tons of locals in business along with tons of events (because honestly i thought there was nothing to do around here otherwise.. I was so wrong.) they also allow me to networking using my own business name too, which takes a long time to gain trust, but it’s so worth it. I still worked at a lawyer’s office until i couldnt’ do the commute any longer, work was slowly picking up and i’m still only on year 3 here and now i work for a couple magazines, a local wedding shop, and another company in photography along with my actual business and now of course.. this podcast that has been in fruition for years until i finally got the courage to step up and learn that too. Randomly it was one night in Oklahoma while i was there alone on a business trip and while sitting with my own thoughts, i finally got the encouragement and courage to move forward with it.

it wasn’t and still isn’t easy. i complained to close friends, cried a lot, got down on on my progress, and wondered how i could pick it up. but it’s been the most fulfilling years, seeing my hard work slowly show and then those moments that i just spoke about with someone close to me. those moments you can feel the opportunities coming as they trickle in and you know some great things are headed your way as long as you continue….

If you have some awesome management software and your process is on point, then props to you because i’ve been in business for years, and this year i finally took the leap to get software that helps my process and transitions more smooth the best part is, having a management software is allowing my business to grow with a team (so far just me and Abby, but we both have the goal of hiring on more people in time.) Which means we can both grow and then teach future team members the ins and outs, have it all in one place, and make it streamline to grow.

If you don’t have a system, again i can’t suggest honey book enough. it has all my client info, automated proposals, invoices, calendar, tasks, payments and more. It helps my clients experience to be more consistent with time and make sure i’m not forgetting steps! I also have a 50% code for your first year, so if you’re thinking about it, sign up free and if you LOVE it, use the code! It’ll be in today’s show notes at

I’ve been learning about multi passionate people, and although i felt alone in this for years thinking it was just me wanting to do too much, i’m finding that it’s actually a very healthy way to expand . So if you’re like me and you love trying new things and maybe seasons bring different focused passions, even if you’re trying something that doesn’t stick forever, those focused experiences can add foundation and value to your job, next passion, and even give you the networking or ability to lead the path to the next adventure and enhancing it.

this quote i came across recently said if you plant a lot of seeds, some will die, and some will thrive. I’ve shared before when i get my mind set to something i get obsessed with it even if for a season but it always feels fulfilling at the time and that there’s a purpose my mind is set on it, it usually brings out the real reason i’m so passionate for it.

Although i’m not strictly talking business, a lot of times our muiti-passionate hobbies can make great side businesses So here’s a permission for today’s world. single fixed identity is a liability today. makes you more vulnerable to sudden changes in economic conditions. We’ve all experienced this in the past year.

It doesn’t have to necessarily be a new thing you try has to bring in money, it absolutely might at some point, or it might help guide you to a real passion that does bring in more income, or just help you feel more fulfilled. In the book I'm reading currently they talk about multi passionate people being and feeling more fulfilled. I’m still working on this book, but just using different parts of your brain for tasks passions and careers is a great start to feel more excited and even if they’re not related, my passions trickle into motivation and knowledge for another part of my life.

it also requires you to shed some things in your life that don’t fulfill or give you fulfillment anymore as it goes to the wayside. It’s a great tool to really hone in on time management we can’t do it all at once, but we can try different things in seasons in our life to help us further our contacts and knoedlge that can help us with the next passion or career.

Let’s go back a bit on the whole when’s the last time you tried something new?

i’m not saying you won’t be scared, in fact if you don’t feel scared even a little- i don’t think you’re pushing yourself enough. I’ve told people i’ve been nervous about trying a few of the things that i have i still do it, but i’m vocal that i am scared, and that’s perfectly okay. a calculated risk, adventure, and path is always worth it even if you come out with only experience on the other end.

and another quote is if you haven’t even had a tiny question of can i really do this, you haven’t even scratched the surface of what you’re actually capable of?can’t be so afraid of something that it stops you from doing it, life gets boring when you stay in the limits of what you already know. if you’re not even sure about even little things you want to try and haven’t allowed yourself to think of new adventures, grab your jounral- it’s always gives your thoughts somewhere to go. it doesn’t have to be fancy, lists of things in your areas and then start writing those big scary dreams you maybe haven’t said out loud. if you really want those big scary dreams, start sketching out the small steps to achieve them. John c Maxwell and one of my favorite quotes “you’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily, the secret to your success is found in your daily routine.”

So what’s holding you back from trying the big moves whether it’s an added career, an actual move, or the small things like new experiences and new activities? The quickest way to acquire self-confidence is to do exactly what you’re afraid to do, you’re more than capable.
